PAINT A TINY BIRD HOUSE

Come out and paint your very own Tiny Bird House! Bird House for decorative purposes only.

PACIFIC CREST TRAIL HIKE

Come join us for a 5 mile interpretive hike along the Pacific Crest Trail.

Please bring water and a snack. This hike considered moderate.

FORECASTING EARTHQUAKES

Can “anyone” forecast earthquakes?  Come and hear an authority in the field discuss just what IS involved in forecasting earthquakes.  She can give you a different perspective of what we live with every day, in Southern California.

PLANT IDENTIFICATION WALK

Join two professionals who will share their knowledge of Biology and Botany, as they take you on a walk & teach you to identify our local plants & wildflowers.  Learn from the experts!

Time: Approx 1-1 ½ hours.  *One mile, easy hike.        Location: Grassy Hollow Visitor Center

PINE NEEDLE BASKET CLASS!

Learn how to use Pine Needles to make a Basket.  Great for the Adult that is looking for a new Hobby!       *Reservation required due to limited space: grassyhollow@hotmail.com

Learn how Native Americans used local plants for food, medicine and more!  You might even get to taste a sample of Nature’s Bounty!

REPTILES!!!

Come and see many live specimens!  You will learn about snakes and lizards that slither and crawl around in our area!   NOTE: Due to popular demand, this Program will be presented TWICE!

July 8 — Saturday @ 9 am — *KID ACTIVITY
LIGHTNING RIDGE TRAIL HIKE

Bring the kids out to learn the ecology of the surrounding area. Learn how forest fires, animals, the wind, snow and the climate affect nature. Great for Adults too!

Length: ¾ of a mile with some uphill parts.  *Adventure Pass required to park at trail head.

Time: Approx 1 ½  hour         — Location: Inspiration Point on Hwy 2

Want to see more local Birds?  Come find out how! Enjoy learning about the many birds of our area by hearing a local authority on Birds and their habitat.  Then see how many you can identity right from our bird deck at Grassy Hollow!

EARTHQUAKE WALK

Join us for a walk along a local stretch of the famous San Andreas Fault and learn about Earthquakes from a well-versed naturalist guide.  See many interesting formations.

*Easy 1.5 mile hike

Time: Approx.  1 ½ hours                              — Location: Apple Tree Campground

ANIMALS OF THE FOREST

Learn more about the Animals we may encounter in the forest!  Mountain Lions, Bobcats and

Bears, OH MY!!!  Presentation will include discussion of animals who call the forest their home, including a variety of mammals, insects, birds and reptiles.  Come and meet your neighbors!

July 29 — Saturday @ 9 am — *KIDS ACTIVITY
ADVENTURE HIKE!

Come join us for an easy 1 mile journey into the forest. Learn about forest animal habitats, the plants and the trees and how NOT to get lost on a trail. When the hike is done come meet a real “Mountain Man” and his pack animals.

Would you like to meet a REAL “Mountain Man” and his pack animals?  They will show you the Old Ways for Modern Days.  He’s riding in today to the Grassy Hollow Amphitheater to advocate good trail manners  and to promote the use, care and development of   (Cont’d)

California  Backcountry Trails, Campsites, Streams and Meadows;  He has a wealth of information to share and demonstrate with visitors.

MOONLIGHT HIKE ON BADEN POWELL

Come join us for an exciting hike to the top of Mt. Baden Powell in the daylight and hike back down in the moon light. “Strenuous” hike.  8 miles roundtrip.

Time: Approx 7-8 hours.               Location: Vincent Gap off Hwy 2, Adventure pass required

SMOKEY BEARS BIRTHDAY!

Party! Party! Party! Come join us and help us celebrate Smokey the Bears Birthday!  Come and meet Smokey Bear.  Learn his fire prevention story, help him celebrate his Birthday, and have some Cake! FREE!  There will be fun activities, Music and Crafts for the kids and Adults too!

MAPS & COMPASSING — DISCOVERING YOUR SENSE OF PLACE

A look at how a local hiking trail map was made.  This program will cover basic map and compass reading to help you gain confidence interpreting maps and hiking our local trails.   We will also practice locating peaks and canyons visible from Grassy Hollows ridge top location.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAIL

Join us for an easy 2 miles to interpretive hike on Table Mountain nature trail.

Please bring water and wear proper shoes/clothing. Adventure Pass required to park at location. Great for all ages!

Time: Approx 2 ½ hours — Location: Outside of Table Mountain Campground

Sept  2 — Saturday @ 7 pm
MINER VINCENT MEMORIAL & CAMPFIRE PROGRAM

Sit around the campfire and sing songs with Volunteers of the Angeles Forest.  Then join us for the 29th presentation of this Campfire Program and meet the “Old Man of the Mountain”, Miner Vincent himself.  Listen to him tell stories of the Gold Rush & the last of the local Grizzlies.                                                                                        — (Cont’d on next page…)

*Limited parking next to the Amphitheater.  Use your Adventure Pass to park on outside of the campground or park at Mountain High North, and Carpool or Hike in.

*Recommend flashlight and a jacket.

MINER VINCENT CABIN HIKE & SCAVENGER HUNT

Hike the trail that leads to the actual Cabin where old Miner Vincent lived.

*One mile,  easy hike.

Time: Approx 1 ½ hours                                — Location: Vincent Gap Parking Lot

DIRECTIONS TO PROGRAM LOCATIONS

APPLE TREE CAMPGROUND:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take N4 approx 2 miles.  Apple Tree Campground is on the left.

BIG PINES VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER/BIG PINES INTERPRETIVE TRAIL/BIG PINES RANGER STATION:  Located at Junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines. 3 miles west of Wrightwood.

GRASSY HOLLOW VISITOR CENTER:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2 west, approx. 2.8 miles. Turn right at the Visitor Center Sign.

INSPIRATION POINT/LIGHTNING RIDGE: From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2, approx. 1.8 miles.  *Meet at the parking lot on the right, near the Restrooms.

TABLE MOUNTAIN WALK & CAMPGROUND AMPHITHEATER: From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Table Mt. Road approx. 1 mile to Mountain High North parking lot.  For Amphitheater, turn left. Follow signs in the campground to Amphitheater.  Amphitheater parking is limited.  You are encouraged to use your Adventure Pass, park at Mountain High North, and carpool or hike in.  *Bring a Flashlight!

VINCENT GAP PARKING LOT:            From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2 west, approx. 5 miles.  Park on the left, near the base of Mt. Baden Powell.
