Hikes and Activities-Summer 2008

Programs are free; check for Adventure Pass/Golden Passport requirements.  It is recommended that water, snacks, and appropriate footwear be brought on all walks/hikes.

 Programs are subject to change or cancellation.  To confirm schedule, please check our website or call Grassy Hollow Visitor Center Saturdays or Sundays between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at (626) 821-6737.  If there is no answer, call the Volunteers of the Angeles National Forest, Loren Lake, President (private residence) at (760) 868-0390.

Saturday, May 24, 2008                      1:00 p.m.                                 Lightning Ridge Nature Walk

(Memorial Day Weekend) Walk though an area of the forest containing examples of the forces of nature that shaper our region

Approx.  ½ mi. easy hike.

Saturday, May 31, 2008                      1:00 p.m.                                                         Geology Talk

What’s underfoot in the San Gabriel Mountains?  Learn about the rock cycle and what rocks you might see when you hike in our local area.

Join a botanist who will take you on a walk to identify some of our local plants.

Hike through an area burned by the 1997 Narrows Fire.  See the amazing forest recovery!

Learn about the local birds we can identify right from our deck at Grassy Hollow and then join us on a bird-sighting walk.

Saturday, August 30, 2008     NOTE: 7:30 p.m.                                            Campfire Program

(Labor Day Weekend)                                                                                                Miner Vincent

Join us for the 21st presentation of this campfire program and meet the “old man of the mountain,” Miner Vincent, himself.  Listen to him tell stories of the gold rush and the last of the local grizzlies.  Limited parking. Use your Adventure Pass, park at Mountain High North, and carpool or hike in.  A flashlight and  jacket are recommended.

(Labor Day Weekend) Hike to the actual cabin where old Miner Vincent lived. 

Approx. 1 mi. easy hike.

Time: Approx. 1 ½ hours                                               Location: Vincent Gap parking lot

Directions to Program Locations

Apple Tree Campground:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4 and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take N4 approx. 2 miles.
Apple Tree Campground is on the left.

Grassy Hollow Visitor Center:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2 west
approx. 2.8 miles. Turn right at the Visitor Center sign.

Inspiration Point/Lightning Ridge:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2
approx. 1.8 miles. Meet at the parking lot on the right near the restrooms.

Table Mountain Walk & Campground Amphitheater:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines,
take Table Mt. Road approx. 1 mile to Mountain High North parking lot. For amphitheater, turn left. Follow signs in the campground to amphitheater. Amphitheater parking is limited. You are encouraged to use your Adventure Pass, park at Mountain High North, and carpool or hike in. Bring a flashlight!

Vincent Gap Parking Lot:  From the junction of Table Mt. Rd., N4, and Hwy 2 at Big Pines, take Hwy 2 west
approx. 5 miles. Park on the left near the base of Mt. Baden Powell.
